Fuel-efficient vehicles driving Ford sales (F)

The Financial Post reports on Ford Motor Company’s (NYSE: F) growing sales of fuel-efficient vehicles in Canada:

Ford Motor Company of Canada had its best June sales in 22 years as consumers flocked to more fuel-efficient vehicles last month in the face of high gas prices.

Ford said its sales rose 6% last month to 33,450 vehicles compared to a year ago, markings its best June since 1989. Those sales were bolstered by a 32% increase in its car sales during the month, the automaker said.

“After some uncertainty in May, we experienced a nice uptick in showroom traffic in June,” said David Mondragon, Ford of Canada chief executive, in a statement. “Our investment in smaller more fuel efficient vehicles is clearly paying off as consumers continue to look for great fuel economy.”

Fuel efficient vehicles represent a bright light in an otherwise dark world for domestic automakers struggling under the burdens of unfunded pensions and high fixed costs. As Executive Chairman of Ford’s board, Bill Ford has made fuel efficiency and future technologies the core of his strategy for turning around Ford.
